Would you buy these AKs?

I have a chance to buy (FTF) one or the other (or both):

- A Bulgarian AK-47 with about 400 rounds through it (walnut colored furniture with black hand grip)

- A Norinco MAK-90 w/thumbhole stock

The Bulgarian is more interesting to me. They both come with 2-3rd mags, 1-10 rd mag, and 1-5 rd. mag. The price is the same - $600 each.

I tried to feel out the seller on price, and he seems firm. He said he is getting rid of this calliber in favor of .308/.223, but he also said he is keeping a Yugo SKS.

What would you do? Make an offer? For which one?

PS - He also has a Garand for $1,100 and a M1 Carbine for $900 -- both overpriced in my book.

Actually, those prices are fair if both rifles are in good condition. Garand prices have been rising, and the only one my dealer has left is an SA Iwo Jima commemorative model with a $1700 price tag. SA is getting over $1100 for new Garands. Yes, you can get "Service Grade" rifles from the CMP for around $600, but the latest ones have been pretty rough.

I have not seen any decent M1 Carbines for a while at any prices under $1,000.

This summer I saw good quality Garands @ $700 at the gun show. Also saw a couple M1 Carbines under $600 each.

Face To Face

Prices on the AKs don't wow me, I would offer him 1k for the pair and see if he bites. 600 for an Arsenal isn't bad, I dunno if it's an Arsenal Bulgarian or not. It could be a milled Bulgy, in which case 600 is WAY cheap.

On the Garand/carbine, those prices may be out of line, or they may not. What's the condition/maker/parts makeup. For typical mixmasters that's too high, but if they are correct it's cheap. I'd drop 1100 on a beater IHC Garand in a heartbeat.

I'd take the MAK-90 but that happens to be the AK I am partial to; I absolutely love the thumbhole stock on those. In today's market $600 is an okay deal for a clean MAK90 with accessories. You can beat that but then you're looking at transfer fees and NICS.

I'd go for the MAK90 then........sounds like you'd be happier with that purchase. You could offer $500 for the Bulg just to see if he bites.

The MAK90 is definitely worth more.

Re: Would you buy these AKs?

Earlier MAK-90s are well made--ignoring the clunky stock--with 1.6 mil receivers. Mine was one of the best shooting with Chinese ammo. Later ones started getting a bit sloppy in fit and finish. Chinese mags will fit the best...not sure if combloc mags fit as well. The price is probably about right in todays market, since MAKs won't be imported again.

If the Bulgarian is an Arsenal, it would be worth $600 easy. A bit more for milled receiver.

If you have seen them first-hand and they both look good, make offer for both...like Beef suggested. But, my interest would be towards the Bulgarian.

The Garand and M-1 are too overpriced for me as well.

I offered him $1k for the pair. I believe they are both stamped receivers (he mentioned the Bulgarian in particular as being stamped). Come to find out, they belong to his son who is in Iraq. He is going to e-mail him and get back to me with an answer tomorrow.

Go with the MAK90....especially if it has a straight-cut receiver.

I have a pair of SKS paratroopers, but no AK. I really could use one of them. I'd probably want to use the Bulgarian and hold the MAK-90 as an investment in the event of a legislation driven panic.
